India: geography location and Nature



Indian subcontinent is situated in north east hemisphere that is lies between 6°4' (8°4' N Main land) north latitude to 37°6' North latitude and from 68°7' east longitude to 97°25' east longitude.

India' s total border land length is 15106.7 KM. and total coastline length [Including Main land(6100 KM), Andman-Nicobar Islands and lakshadweep group] is 7516.6 KM.

India has almost quadrangular shape. The maximum extension of India in north-south is 3214 KM and in east-west is 2933 KM.

The main land of India extends from Kashmir in north to Kanyakumari in south and from Arunachal Pradesh in east to Gujarat in west.

The total area of India is 32.8 lac KM² which is cover 2.4% of total world geographical area.

The Tropic of Cancer (23°30' north latitude) passes through total 8 states of the country - Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram.

Standard Time Line and Tropic of Cancer cross each other in Chhattisgarh.

The Eastern and Western Ghats of India meet in 'Nilgiri'.

In term of area the largest state of India is Rajasthan and smallest state is Goa.

In term of area the largest union territory of India is Andman-Nicobar islands and smallest is Lakshadweep.   

The border land of India touches 7 countries border land- Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar (Burma), Bangladesh.

North-eastern states- Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland are Known as Seven Sisters.

Gulf of Khambat is situated between Daman and Diu.
